Narrative:
Before I studied abroad in Japan, I really didn't know what to expect other than the general stereotypical things that made Japan famous and notorious. My level of Japanese proficiency during this time was still considered to be low or average, which clouded my judgment of excelling in the language. At first, I was scared of people criticizing me for my mistakes, but after meeting other international students and Japanese natives, I realized that the international students and I were all on the same boat of learning and making mistakes. It was thanks to this that my Japanese abilities were able to flourish, leading me to where I am today. One of my favorite things to do was volunteering at Okayama University's language cafe. this allowed to me make new friends and practice my Japanese as well as gain some tutoring experience by helping Japanese students with their English. Since I was awarded with many many scholarships, financial aid, and other grants, I was able to travel around Japan to see the vast differences between the city life and that of the rural area. I have since cherished my priceless experiences and told others my stories, in hopes that someday they will travel to Japan and experience the same things as I once did.
During my first semester, most of my classes that I was enrolled in where strictly Japanese taught only in Japanese by native Japanese teachers. It was during this time where I was able to transition from what I learned back in my home university and pick up the regions dialect. I found myself improving the most during this time since I was fully immersed into the Japanese language not only in school but also in my surroundings.
